The basics of the bouncing ball are spacing and squash and stretch. If I wanted to animate a realistic bouncing ball I would still use the following formula, but I wouldn't use this level of exaggeration. And this is essentially what animation is - a caricature of life.

You'll notice that this animation is not strictly realistic, it is an exaggeration of what a real ball does. But hopefully these animations are good enough to demonstrate what I’m talking about. Unfortunately I did this in the program Maya, with limited time and perfect ellipses are what Maya likes to make. This would help with the strobing during these frames to. Ideally, the squash shapes wouldn’t be perfect ellipses - there should be more of the ball’s underside in contact with the ground. This is almost a textbook perfect bouncing ball. I’ll then go on to show how it can be applied in animation. I'll be showing in detail how and why it works and what happens when it goes wrong.

It is essentially just a trick or formula, but once learnt it can then be applied to a million different things. When I first started this project I was inspired by the Sony Bravia TV advert of bouncing balls, obviously this was done with real balls but I would really like to get this kind of movement. The bouncing ball is crucial in animation because it can be used to give weight and life to a character. Does anyone know how to make a more realistic reaction of bouncing balls on stairs.

The balls currently move very fast, im talking about within the 200 frames the animation is done, and the balls dont really 'bounce' really just fall straight down the stairs. I have since created a simple scene with stairs and two balls, I managed to get the balls to interact with the stairs but at the moment it's not very accurate movement. I built up the scene using passive bodys and then created a few active bodies for the balls, pressing play then didn't do anything. For a University project I am compositing bouncing balls into a scene after trying and failing with Maya's Rigid body system I was directed from another forum to this plugin and website.
