
In Berlin she found some freedom to think about what she really wanted to make. She’d been making dance pieces in New York and performing with the outrageous Ann Liv Young among others, but felt frustrated by the constraints and etiquette of the theatre format and the difficulty of really connecting with an audience. The Occasions came about when Lewis made the move from New York to Berlin seven years ago. They might hear music, or see Lewis DJ, they can eat and drink a curated menu, be surrounded by specially designed smells, watch dancers or hear Lewis and invited guests discuss and debate ideas. Lewis works with architects, such as Juan Chacón of the Madrid and Berlin-based architecture collective Zuloark, sound designers, chefs and dancers to create spaces for people to linger.
